Our Walk to The Fortress in Kotor Montenegro – A Photo Essay

Today we decided to trek the city walls in Kotor, Montenegro.

It was a bit of a “difficult” walk up the steps to the fortress but unbelievably, totally worth it.

You pay 3 Euros to enter the area and the walk up takes around 40 minutes plus, depending on your fitness and depending on how often you stop to take photos.

As you walk up the steps, every time you look around you are confronted with a beautiful view of the city; the red roofs, the old city and the glorious mountains.

This place is truly inexplicable and the huffing and puffing you experience as you walk up the rough pebbled steps is totally worth it!

People say the view is the same all the way up and while that’s possibly true, when up the top, you get a 360 view of the surroundings. Also, the Fortress of St John is totally worth a wander around. It is run down and doesn’t seem to be restored at all and that’s what makes it truly magical!

Very worth the sweat that you can see on our heads!

All in all, a very well spent 3 Euros and as a side note, if you are going to both Dubrovnik, Croatia and Kotor, Montenegro, I would highly recommend skipping the city walls in Dubrovnik and replace it with these walls instead! They are a lot more exciting and interesting and I felt like you really got to see a lot more of the city.

Be prepared for the walk though! 🙂
